Counselling Skills Courses

There are a few counselling skills courses around Brighton. CPCAB level 2 is for people new to counselling skills but with some relevant experience it is possible to go straight to NCFE level 2. Because of my experience with Brighton Anxiety Forum this is what I did. I've now studied counselling skills courses at Varndean up to NCFE level 3 and here's an account of my experiences:

NCFE Level 2:

Most of my classmates had studied together on the CPCAB level 2 course and were well acquainted. I was a little worried that I didn't know anyone but I needn't have as everyone was very friendly and welcoming. To be honest, I didn't really know what to expect, wasn't sure what level we'd be starting on and whether I'd be out of my depth having skipped the previous course.

The course itself was mainly based around a combination of theory, skills practice (mostly role plays) and weekly journals. The theory itself is very thought provoking and we had many interesting and enjoyable class debates.

The skills practice was also interesting although at times for me in the beginning a little anxiety provoking but I soon got over that.

NCFE Level 3:

This course really started to investigate the different types of counselling and we practiced various techniques ourselves in pairs or small groups. Overall I would say that the course taught me a lot about counseling practices and, perhaps surprisingly, a lot about myself.
